Limit category availability

It is possible to make a category available only to certain user roles and/or users. If category availability is restricted in this way, all offers belonging to this category are only available to specified user roles and/or users.

To limit the availability of a category, do the following:

  1. Locate the category in the category tree and select it. The category gets displayed in the detail tab on the right of the tree.

Click the Edit category button to switch to the edit mode.

  2. Toggle the Category is only available for selected user roles or users switch to Yes. The three possible ways of availability specification get displayed. Use the one which fits your case:

    1. User role(s) only

Select this option to make the category available to all members of one or more user roles already defined via USU user management.

      • In the Select user role(s) dropdown, select one or more user roles. The dropdown offers only user roles specifically defined for the Shop application.

    2. User(s) only

Select this option to make the category specifically available to certain users regardless of their affiliation to user roles.

      • In the Select user(s) dropdown, select one or more users. The dropdown offers all users who are allowed to use the Shop application. It utilizes an auto-complete functionality to automatically fill in available values matching the typed string.

      • Note that the preferred way is availability specification via user roles. Specification via individual users should only be used in special cases, such as when the category is to be available to a limited set of users which does not justify the creation of a dedicated user role via USU user management.

    3. Both user role(s) and user(s)

Select this option to specify the availability of the category by a combination of user role(s) and user(s). For example, make a category available to all members of a certain user role plus selected individuals belonging to other user roles.

      • Similar to the point above, this option should be used only if the situation does not justify the creation of a corresponding user role.

  3. Click Update category at the top of the category detail to save the changes. As soon as the edit is saved, the changes take effect.

Note that toggling the Category is only available for selected user roles or users switch to Yes makes specifying one of the availability options mandatory. To save the category without any availability restrictions, the toggle must first be switched back to the No position.

End user perspective

Users not fitting the specified availability criteria will not see the category and its offers. Note, however, that if an offer belongs also to another category which does not have the same availability limitations, the offer will still be available to the users via the other "unrestricted" category. To make an offer available only to certain user roles and/or users regardless of its category assignments, limit the availability of the offer itself.
